Kyoto University of Advanced Science (“KUAS”) was founded in 1969 in Kameoka City, a progressive, constantly innovating and evolving with the times.

It has two campuses in Kyoto; one in Uzumasa and another in Kameoka, each of these possessing its own unique characteristics and facilities.

KUAS’s vision is a brighter future for society.

Main Features

All-English Programs
KUAS is a international university and offers all-English programs for undergraduates and graduates in Engineering, making it possible to obtain skills at an advanced level in English, even in Japan.
The Engineering program will be joined by the Bioenvironmental Sciences International Program and Global Business and Economics Program in 2025, opening 2 new faculties to English-speaking students.
Acquisition of Japanese Language Proficiency

Students will also have Japanese language courses* during their program. It will supplement their technical skill and can broaden their options for post-graduation career paths.

KUAS is located in Kyoto, the former capital of Japan for more than a millennium. Kyoto remains a center of culture, industry, technology, and history. It is an academic city that has produced numerous Nobel Prize winners, and it is also home to many of the world’s leading high-tech industries and long-standing companies that have been in operation for centuries.

KUAS has Uzumasa Campus in the city area, where there are many historical sites, shops, convenience stores and restaurants. 

Kameoka Campus, the other KUAS campus, is located in the western part of Kyoto, surrounded by nature.

The Mechanical and Electrical Systems Engineering department offers an interdisciplinary and highly versatile curriculum that allows students to become engineers with remarkable skills in a variety of fields essential to modern engineering.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems Engineering focuses on the intelligent technology platforms essential to addressing the global challenges of fields such as the environment, energy efficiency, sustainability, disaster prevention and relief, food production, and large energy generation systems, to name a few. This technology also fuels innovation in fields such as industrial robots, drones or AII-driven machinery.

  • Study of Extended Mechatronics

    Mechatronics is the academic area of focus at KUAS Graduate School of Engineering. Conventional fields of mechatronics have included mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering. At KUAS, these fields are extended with chemicals, materials, information and knowledge engineering Skills acquired in these disciplines can be applied in many industries Learn in an “on-the-research training” environment under the supervision of globally-active professors from around the world.
    More specifically, the study of mechatronics at the graduate level includes:
    mechanical engineering, for the development of actuators (such as motors), mechanical elements, sensors, and control equipment, as well as design, production and information processing; electrical, electronic, and communications engineering, for the development of electromagnetic and communication circuits and devices; materials science and engineering, for developing new materials and their mechanical applications; computer science and information engineering, for information processing, machine learning and big data analysis; and chemical engineering, for the development of batteries essential to electrical vehicles, autonomous systems and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Bioenvironmental Sciences (Open in september 2025)

Course Description

In the Bioenvironmental Sciences Program, students study nature and life from multiple perspectives. 

In the bioscience field, students explore the new power of life by analyzing phenomena and functions of organisms at the molecular level. They also conduct fieldwork, where they learn about the diversity of plants and animals and investigate methods for creating a sustainable natural environment. 

In the field of food, which is an essential aspect of life, students get acquainted with new technologies in agriculture and food processing and seek solutions to overcome potential future food crises.

The topics students can study in Bioenvironmental Sciences include all trends related to problems that mankind is facing today.

The Bioenvironmental Sciences Program has a practical curriculum structure, with approximately more than half of the time spent in experiments and hands-on training.

In their first two years, students engage in extensive studies on bioscience, the environment, and food and agriculture; from their third year, students choose an area of study that suits their interests and career path, with more advanced, specialized coursework. Students have the opportunity to participate in joint research with external research institutes and companies and hone skills that will serve as beneficial tools in their field of work.

    The 231,764㎡ KUAS Kameoka Campus is home to the Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences, which includes full-scale laboratories, fields for growing crops, and a forest ideal for observing and investigating nature. The Bioenvironmental Sciences Program focuses on gaining hands-on experience at these facilities. Students can acquire in-depth practical training in the surrounding wildlife without leaving campus.

  •  Cross-curricular Program

    The Faculty of Bioenvironmental Sciences offers a cross-disciplinary curriculum that allows students to study multiple specialized fields simultaneously. Students can develop vast knowledge on the array of elements related to nature and life. In the second half of the program, students will specialize in their chosen field and participate in related research and projects.

Course Description

The Global Business and Economics Program at KUAS seeks to nurture self-established global business leaders who can not only survive but also succeed in the VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) age. Under the guidance of outstanding instructors, the program aims to foster individuals who have a firm grasp of global politics, economics, and culture, respond flexibly in a variable business environment, as well as identify and attempt to solve management issues independently.
The Global Business and Economics Program emphasizes the study of both business management and economics from a global perspective, with all lectures conducted in English. The Global Business and Economics Program reflects the characteristics of both the Department of Economics, which is characterized by research and education on behavioral economics―a more realistic field than the mainstream economics of the past―and the Department of Business Administration, which is exemplified by its research and education on entrepreneurship and innovation. The variety of course selection as well as diversity of staff ensure that our students become versatile in intercultural knowledge and language skill and train them to be well-versed in all fields relevant to the multifaceted business world.
Moreover, students will also participate in one of the internship programs specially provided for students of business and economics. Many companies, not only in Kyoto but also across Japan and abroad, are planning to accept interns. Students can use this as an opportunity to assess the array of fundamental business knowledge and strategies that they studied in class and get acclimated to applying it in actual workplace situations.
