Breaking into Japan’s manga industry is a dream for many, but for most international creators, it can feel almost impossible.
Language barriers. Cultural differences. Industry access.
But today, we’re proud to share a story that proves it is possible.
A Historic First: Gin’s Manga Debut in Japan
Gin, a student from Uruguay and participant in DEOW Japan’s Global Tokiwaso Project, is officially making their debut in Japan’s commercial manga industry.
His new series, “Go Fun no Ace” (Ace of 5 Minutes), will begin serialization on April 10, 2026, in the digital shonen magazine comic Zerise.
Even more impressively, the first chapter will be featured as a lead color opening, a major spotlight position typically reserved for high-potential new series.
Gin is believed to be the first manga artist from Uruguay to debut in a Japanese commercial manga publication.
This isn’t just a personal achievement; it’s a milestone for international creators worldwide.
From Student to Serialized Manga Artist
Gin’s journey didn’t happen overnight.
Before his debut, he was selected as a finalist in Shogakukan’s Sunday Webry Newcomer Award (June 2025)—a highly competitive contest that often serves as a gateway into the professional manga world.
Through consistent effort, mentorship, and industry exposure, Gin transformed his passion into a professional opportunity.
And that journey began with DEOW Japan.
What Is the Global Tokiwaso Project?
The Global Tokiwaso Project is DEOW Japan’s unique manga study abroad program designed specifically for international creators who want to break into Japan’s manga industry.
Unlike traditional programs, this is not just about learning about the industry; it’s about becoming a professional manga artist in Japan.

What makes it different?
- Professional mentorship from manga instructors and industry experts
- Creative residence in Japan with like-minded artists
- Portfolio development & feedback directly aligned with industry standards
- Support for manga contests (like the one Gin entered)
- Opportunities to submit work to Japanese publishers
This is the exact environment that helped Gin go from aspiring artist to published creator.
About “5-Fun no Ace”
Gin’s debut work, “5-Fun no Ace,” is a volleyball-based sports manga that goes beyond the typical storyline of star players and full matches. Instead, it focuses on high-pressure moments and the determination of athletes who only have a few minutes to prove themselves. Centered on the powerful idea of changing the course of a game from the bench, the story delivers intense drama, emotional growth, and high-stakes action that highlights the value of every second on the court.
Why This Matters for Future Students
Japanese manga is loved around the world, but very few international creators ever make it into Japan’s professional publishing industry.
Gin’s success shows that you don’t have to be born in Japan to become a manga artist here. With the right support and guidance, international talent can break into the industry, and programs like the Global Tokiwaso Project can turn what once felt like a distant dream into a real, achievable career path.
