As a way to support those who wish to learn Japanese but are unable to come to Japan—in general and also due to the coronavirus situation—or unable to access quality Japanese lessons in your home country, the Japan Study Abroad Network matches you with experienced, English-speaking Japanese teachers to provide affordable and high-quality 1-on-1 classes online to serve a variety of learning objectives. Because these classes are private, meaning it is just you and your teacher, you will have the opportunity to speak with your teacher about any changes you'd like to make about the class content as you go, so that you are always learning what you need, as your needs change. In this way, it's okay if you are not sure exactly what course to take. Before you decide to take our lessons and begin your program, you can have a free 20-minute trial session online with one of our Japanese teachers to confirm your objectives and discuss a plan that will work for you. If you are planning on coming to Japan for study or work, we can provide accommodation services, higher education counselling and career support.

To participate properly in class, you will need:
- a computer or tablet with wifi connectivity for sharing slides & documents
(phones can only be acceptable for advanced-level students who are able to understand without visual aids) - an account in one of the following apps: Skype, Google Meets, Zoom, FB Messenger.

- a relatively quiet location so that you can hear your teacher clearly

Our teachers are based in Tokyo, Japan, but as this program runs online, students can attend from all around the world.

General Japanese Language Course
Course Description
This program is designed for those who would like an intensive and well-rounded study of the Japanese language, which encompasses reading, writing, listening and speaking. Lessons highlight the important grammar structures of the Japanese language, train your reading and writing abilities, and teach the key vocabulary words necessary for continued academic study in Japanese. This course is suitable for complete beginner- to advanced-level students who are serious about learning Japanese in the long-term. It is highly recommended to learn hiragana and katakana before beginning this course.
Topics include:
- Conversational Japanese, including greetings, small talk, and talking about yourself
- Japanese grammar, with explanations and exercises for practise
- Writing short stories and articles
- Verbal communication practise so that you can express your ideas and ask questions
- Support in Japanese and kanji can also be included

Practical Japanese Conversation Course
Course Description
This class is designed for those who wish to improve their Japanese communication abilities, with an emphasis on speaking and reading in everyday, useful Japanese. This course is a little less intense than the General Japanese Language Course as you practice communicating with your teacher about real and role-play scenarios, with visual aids to guide the lessons. This course is suitable for beginners to intermediate students who are planning on visiting, living and/or working in Japan, or who wish to be able to communicate with Japanese people more effectively, for a variety of purposes.
Topics include:
- Greetings and common expressions
- Talking about dates & schedule, and making plans with others
- Seeking understanding and confirmation
- Introducing yourself; your family, goals and interests
- Asking for directions and help
- Ordering at restaurants & take-away counters; making payments & shopping
- Making phone reservations for restaurants and hospitals
- Expressing your ideas & opinions, and asking questions

Business Japanese Course
Course Description
This course focuses on Japanese to be used in professional settings, and covers essential verbal communication for both customer service scenarios as well as business-to-business interactions. Upon request, this course can also provide training for resume writing, interviews with Japanese companies, sales and business meetings, presentations, and email writing. This course is broken into two types: Business Survival for Beginners and Advanced Business Communication (recommended for N2+), and is suitable for learners who are currently working with Japanese people or companies, or who aim to work in such professional contexts in the future.
Topics include:
- Professional greetings, expressions, and mannerisms
- Japanese company etiquette and customer service training, including non-verbal essentials
- Resume writing; interview training, including self-introductions
- Custom, in-context scenarios and role-play training
- Writing emails professionally; commonly used sentences and practises

Japanese Test Preparation Course
Course Description
This course is an intensive study of Japanese that focuses on targeted exercises in order to prepare you for taking the most common Japanese language tests, including the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students), BJT (Business Japanese Proficiency Test), J-TEST (Test of Japanese Language), TOPJ (Top Japanese), and NAT-TEST (The Japanese Language Test). This program is intense, and best suited for serious students who are fully committed to passing the exam. Because there will be a lot of homework and training involved, this course will likely require students to purchase several textbooks.
Topics include:
- Key vocabulary and grammar found on the test and level you are aiming to take
- Writing exercises to build skills and confidence
- Examine previous tests and take mock tests, both official and created by our teachers
