There is an expression in the English language that is familiar to many people and commonly used in reference to languages: If you don’t use it, you lose it. It follows then, that if what students learn is useful, then they will be able to use it, and if they can use it, they will remember it. On the contrary, if students leave the classroom unable to concretely state what they have learned, then it is unlikely that they will be able to use it, and thus it will be likely be forgotten and need to be trained again. Training language which is practical is therefore more efficient.
With this understanding and philosophy, DEOW is proud to present the Practical Japanese Conversation Program, which addresses the growing need for efficient and effective training so that students can spend less time studying and more time communicating and connecting with people in their everyday life, and moreover enjoying Japan and its extraordinary culture.
Whether you are visiting Japan in the short term and want to be able to get around and connect with the locals, planning on studying Japanese in school but want to learn natural Japanese, or are living in Japan and want to be able to do so more comfortably, this course provides you with the training you need to comfortably converse in everyday Japanese.
This course is unique as it takes on a language coaching-style methodology that is highly engaging and interactive. Students are put in real-life situations and learn the key phrases needed to efficiently navigate them.
Each class is focuses on a topic or real-life situation, including daily greetings in different contexts, introducing yourself and various aspects of your life, asking for directions and assistance, ordering at restaurants and cafés, and importantly, asking the questions necessary to understand and confirm what has been said to you so that you can smoothly navigate situations that you didn’t understand. This latter training helps students learn Japanese in Japanese, and ultimately become independent language learners, which is the goal of the course. The lessons build on one another so that gradually students are able to engage in more situations and have deeper conversations.
Most of language is patterns. As students progress through the program, they are introduced to these commonly-used patterns and become familiar with them, enabling students to understand more of what they hear, learn new sentences quicker, and create new sentences on their own that they had never actually learned before. In this way, Japanese grammar is learned through real context. As time goes on, students learn more phrases and patterns, and are able to choose from among them based on the situation.
Our coaching-style approach views language as holistic communication that involves facial expressions, body language, intonation and rhythm. Students are given immediate feedback and guidance as they work through new content so as to help them build their muscle memory of phrases that sound natural. With communication as the main focus, in addition to being trained on suggested content, students also build custom phrases to express what is unique and important to each student. The ultimate goal of our program is that students can become independent language-learners who can navigate everyday life, face the unfamiliar situations that come with it, and express themselves naturally with the Japanese people they are sure to meet.
