About the school

ARC Academy was established in 1986, originally for foreign business people wishing to learn Japanese. The meaning of “ARC” is “bridge to the world.” Ever since, the range of students has expanded from business people to foreign students, researchers, embassy officials, language teachers, trainees and long-term residents. Nowadays students from over fifty countries are studying together at ARC Academy. ARC Academy was established in 1986 for foreign business people wishing to learn Japanese. The meaning of “ARC” is “bridge to the world.” Ever since, the range of students has expanded from business people to foreign students, researchers, embassy officials, language teachers, trainees and long-term residents.
Nowadays students from over fifty countries are studying together at ARC Academy.

Arc Academy has 4 Japanese Language school campuses — 2 in Tokyo, 1 in Kyoto, and 1 in Osaka, with over 1,000 international students from 50 different countries.

As a group of professionals in the Japanese Language education field, ARC Academy staff conducts ongoing study of the most appropriate programs and lesson materials from the perspective of their students, in order to respond as best as possible to the changes in the world and the needs that come with it. And in order to cultivate communication skills and “the ability to think, ARC Academy approaches many different topics, such as society, culture and territory through their enriched classroom activities.

Large-scale, multinational environment
The school consists of 2 campuses in Tokyo in Idabashi and Shinjuku, in addition to facilities in Namba, Osaka and Kyoto. With the number of international students from more than 40 different countries, most students share a common interest in Japanese social and cultural situation and desire to communicate with Japanese people. Therefore, in addition to its quality of teaching, the school also focuses on extracurricular exchanges to ensure students have a more complete experience, with developed soft skills and an authentic cultural exchange as part of the learning process.

The dormitory is within close proximity to the school and is safe & affordable for students, which is especially important for new students who have just arrived in Japan. For part-time work, the school has a dedicated job support center that provides information, advice and job placement to students. This is usually provided to students after the first 3 months of study so that students have acquired some experience daily life in Japan first before starting employment. In addition, the school has scholarship programs for students of excellent academic achievement, and offers financial support for students incurring medical treatment costs.

Standard Study Abroad Course

Standard Japanese Class

  • Levels: Beginner to Fluent
  • Duration of Study: 6 ~ 24 months

This course prepares you for various scenes in daily life and academic and business situations. It has a strong focus on developing communication skills through classroom activities and classwork. Students in this course will be evaluated and receive feedback based on a robust curriculum and assessment criteria. Details of coursework include: pronunciation, listening and reading comprehension, conversation, writing, understanding current events in Japan, and many more.

Students will enrol in a class according to their level of Japanese language achievement and study with peers for 3 months.

Intensive Course

Intensive Course

  • Campus: Tokyo (Iidabashi), Shinjuku, Osaka, Kyoto
  • Start dates: January, April, July, October
  • Requirement: Age 16 and above
  • Levels: Beginner to Fluent
  • Duration of Study: minimum 3 months
  • Visa type: tourist visa, working visa, working holiday visa, dependent visa, spouse visa etc. (students are expected to apply and obtain a visa on their own)

This course follows the same curriculum for the Study Abroad Course, but students can choose to study from a short term of just 3 months, and is an ideal option for students who have a limited time. It helps students to build a strong base of Japanese language skills and understanding of Japanese culture and customs.

Special Classes for Different Goals

Special Preparatory Class for University

  • Campus: Tokyo (Iidabashi)
  • Start dates: April
  • Requirement:
    ★ Eligibility to enter a Japanese university (see the Mombukagakusho criteria here)
    ★ For students who want to enter university the following year
    Apply for EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students) in June and November
    ★ Have a sufficient Japanese language ability, which can be measured in these forms: EJU Test of Japanese, 250 points and higher; pass JLPT N2 level; or pass the ARC entrance exam (equivalent to JLPT N1 level)
    ★ Submit an essay of minimum 400 characters and have an interview with ARC staff prior to entrance
  • Levels: JLPT N2 level / EJU Japanese test 250 points and higher
  • Duration of Study: 12 months
  • Visa type: Student Visa
  • Maximum Class size: 20
  • This course is for students wishing to enter a Japanese university. The entrance requirements for this class are demanding and the class size is kept small, because it aims to foster academic skills as well as focus on individual students to provide personal feedback on interviews and essays. Students will have individualized curricula to reach their goals and academic path / career development sessions to guide them to a wider range of opportunities.

    The course runs through the whole Japanese academic year, allowing students to take EJU twice and apply to both private and national / public universities.

    Students in this course can have mock exams and interviews to help them prepare for competitive university entrance exams.



    Special Preparatory Class for Graduate Schools

    • Campus: Tokyo (Iidabashi)
    • Start dates: July
    • Requirement:
      ★ Have a Bachelor’s Degree (graduation from undergraduate program)
      ★ Have a clear plan of the study they want to pursue
      ★ Have sufficient Japanese language ability, which can be measured in these forms: pass JLPT N1 level; or pass the ARC entrance exam (equivalent to JLPT N1 level)
      ★ Pass the ARC entrance exam (written exam and interview)
    • Levels: JLPT N1 level and higher
    • Duration of Study: 9 months
    • Visa type: Student Visa
    • Maximum Class size: 20
    • This course is specially designed for students wishing to enter a graduate school in Japan. The personalized curriculum helps students prepare academic Japanese, skills for making research plans and collecting data for dissertation. Students will also prepare for entrance examinations, including oral and written presentations. After entrance exams, they will also prepare for their graduate programs by practicing presentations and written reports.

      Students will receive individual career support.



      Business Japanese Class

      • Campus: Tokyo (Iidabashi)
      • Start dates: April, October
      • Requirement:
        ★ Graduation from university
        ★ For students who want to work in Japan or work for a Japanese company overseas
        ★ Have sufficient Japanese language ability, which can be measured in these forms: pass JLPT N2 level; or pass the ARC entrance exam (equivalent to JLPT N level)
        ★ Pass the ARC entrance exam (written essay and interview)
      • Duration of Study: 6 months
      • Visa type: Student Visa
      • Maximum Class size: 20
      • The course is for students wishing to work in Japan or in a Japanese company. The first 3 months focuses on skills to find jobs in Japan, including resume writing skills, interview manners and basic e-mail writing, as well as analyzing companies in Japan to understand business situations. The second 3 months focus on practical training to prepare for business scenes. This includes business conversations, making documents, developing presentation skills and acquiring business manners.

        Students will register for job searching databases, which allows them to look for jobs while learning in the course. Students will also prepare for exams and job interviews with their peers and teachers on a regular basis.

        Students will receive advice from teachers with experience and support regarding internship opportunities, and attend business-related seminars and subjects.

Optional Classes

Optional Classes

  • Campus: Tokyo (Iidabashi), Shinjuku, Osaka, Kyoto
  • Requirement: Enrol in Standard Study Abroad Course or Intensive Course
  • Levels: Intermediate and above

Optional classes are open to students enrolled in the Standard Study Abroad Course or the Intensive Course and are in the intermediate level or above. Optional classes are held 3 times a week and each have themes (about Japan / reading / listening) that help students achieve their personal goals.

Examples of class content (differs according to term):
● About Japan: preparation for university & exams, job-seeking tips, history of Japan, learn business manners, learn Japanese with drama/J-pop/theater, visit Japanese schools
● Reading: Reading exercises for JLPT or EJU preparation, reading academic papers, reading Japanese news articles and newspapers, read Japanese classics/novels/manga
● Listening: Listening exercises for JLPT or EJU preparation, interview listening exercise, listening to news, conversation exercise



Optional Classes for Exam Preparation

  • Campus: Tokyo (Iidabashi), Shinjuku, Osaka, Kyoto
  • Requirement: Be enrolled as an ARC student
  • Levels: Intermediate and above

Optional Classes for Exam Preparation is an additional class that is held twice a week during lunch break. It helps students wishing to take the JLPT or EJU exam to brush up on their skills and test-taking techniques.

Private Lessons

ARC offers specialized private lessons for students with special needs or who want a flexible schedule. The teachers will arrange an individual curriculum for the student according to their goals and Japanese language level, and lessons are available off-site.

This intensive yet exciting summer school takes place in the bustling centre of Shinjuku. It combines Japanese language classes with sightseeing and cultural experience. Students will be placed in classes according to their Japanese language skills (placement tests are on July 5), and with their peers, they will build up their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Students will have opportunities to go on excursions on weekends with the school staff, such as visiting trending museums or going to the maid cafes, having that unique Japanese subcultural experience, as well as trying traditional culture such as tea ceremonies.
